Entur Tavla - Promoting Travel Through Responsive Departure Boards

During the summer, I worked as an Interaction Design Consultant at Bekk Consulting, collaborating with the client Entur on a project aimed at creating a tool for county municipalities. Entur plays a vital role in Norway, taking on the national responsibility of coordinating public transport seamlessly across various companies and modes of transportation, ensuring efficient travel experiences for passengers nationwide. The tool's purpose was to facilitate the creation of departure boards for public transport stops, encouraging travelers to use existing public transportation options.

As the Interaction Designer in our agile and interdisciplinary team of four developers in addition to me, we embarked on an exciting project with Entur. Our goal was to create a user-centered tool for county municipalities to generate departure boards and promote sustainable travel through public transportation.

Our team doing observation of public transportation boards and how passengers user them. An activity planned by me, where I got all the developers to join the observation session.

During the project duration I got experience with several roles and activities:

  • Prototyping interfaces to visualize and refine design concepts effectively.

  • Conduct user interviews and usability tests to gather insights and tailor the tool to user needs.

  • Analyzed user feedback and translated it into actionable design improvements.

  • Managed process meetings, facilitating collaboration, idea exchange, and progress updates.

  • Prioritized inclusivity by verifying the tool's accessibility for diverse user requirements.

  • Integrated developers into design activities and vice versa to ensure seamless collaboration.

  • Utilized a design system with variants and components to streamline the design process.

In the project itself we employed scrumban methodology for sprint planning, backlog prioritization, and process management, we conducted user testing and observations to validate design decisions and improve user experience. With a special focus on responsiveness we ensured compatibility across various screen sizes and older technology platforms. In addition to this, I engaged with third-party stakeholders to strengthen collaboration and drive project success which was a part of laying the groundwork for future enhancements and iterations based on user feedback and insights. The improved tool was developed using technologies such as React, Next, Firebase, and HTML.

Our process resulted in multiple impacts and outcomes such as:

  • Successfully delivering a proof of concept tool that layed the foundation for a larger, more robust solution.

  • Fostering a culture of collaboration and innovation within the team and with external stakeholders.

  • Demonstrating commitment to human-centered design principles and inclusive practices.

  • Positioning the organization for continued growth and impact in promoting sustainable travel practices.

Me joining the developers in a discussion in choice of system architecture to find the best compromise between user needs and architectural best practices.

I often sat together with developers when they programmed to se the changes in the UI live, and discuss possible solutions and clearify misunderstandings. I also co-designed in Figma together with another developer.

Some examples of the finished product.
